Loreto Workers Fund
We have created a special fund to improve the quality of life of the workers of Loreto. The primary activity of this fund will be to support and enhance education and capacity-building for Loreto workers.
One of the first impacts of a large real estate
development project is often a huge influx of
construction workers. The Mexican Constitution
requires all companies to provide "adequate
housing" for their employees. Employers are
also required to pay a percentage of a worker's
salary to the National Worker's Housing
Development Fund Institute (INFONAVIT) to
implement housing programs for workers, or
finance the construction or improvement of
workers' dwellings.
The Loreto Bay Foundation, as part of its mission, has helped mitigate the impacts of this development project on the community of Loreto.
Over the past year, LBF has assisted in supporting architectural plans for worker housing, advising the Loreto Bay Company on measures to remind contractors and labor brokers of their legal obligations, performed routine spot checks of worker housing standards compliance, among others.
Further enhancements of a worker's quality of life include education and alternative entertainment when they are off duty. To address this issue, the Loreto Workers Fund will assist in the development of projects such as: a small library with books and games, opportunities to obtain a GED equivalent, and ESL classes.
